"Horses and Flying Birds, " Exceptional Art Deco Rug in Plum and Honey, Sweden
About the Item
Woven in 1934 using a highly stylized Art Deco design with galloping horses and flying birds, this extraordinary rug was made by Sweden's leading school for weaving, founded by Johanna Brunsson in the 19th century. This piece was made in 1934, just four years after Stockholm hosted the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition -- which showcased modern artisanry from across Sweden and around the world -- at which the Brunsson School exhibited its work. This rug was probably designed by Hildegard Dinclau, who taught at the school from 1930 until it closed in the 1950s, and whose designs were also exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts), which later gave the Art Deco style its name. The rug's yarns are dyed in rich plum and honey-colored hues, and the weaving is superbly executed. This piece is signed with the School's monogram (JBV, for Johanna Brunsson Vävskola, or school), and is also dated -- a very rare feature.
