"Kajaani Castle", Important Art Deco Ryijy Rug w/ Coat of Arms by Pia Katerma

About the Item

Unique and striking, this long pile ryijy rug designed by Pia Katerma in Finland depicts Kajaani Castle at the center of the Coat of Arms of Kajaani, surrounded by geometric patterns and icons in rich, muted colors -- plum, deep red, purple and golden yellow. Kajaani is 560 kilometers northeast of Helsinki, and the castle -- largely in ruins today -- was constructed in the 17th century. The rug was commissioned by Johannes Karvonen, the mayor of Kajaani, and his initials are shown below the coat of arms. The wool is plush and soft, and the workmanship is superb. Katerma was a painter and designer who spent years studying and painting in Paris. Dimensions include the fringe on one side.
