Breathtaking large antique Gavin Morton Arts & Crafts design Irish Donegal rug 49498, country of origin / rug type: Irish rug, date circa 1920. This stunning antique Donegal rug from Ireland, the design of which is attributed to the widely admired Gavin Morton, boasts an absolutely delightful composition, underscored by gorgeous, happy colors throughout. This beautiful antique Irish rug features a beautiful array of soft colors. The soft yet bright colors of the design elements seem to almost be floating atop the expanse of the beautiful ivory background field colors. The main body of the antique rug features the iconic large sized Gavin Morton floral inspired design elements. The field itself features the elegant and serene oversized flower and vine scroll folk art rug patterns. The wide borders that frame this rug create a nice visual contrast with the main field of the rug. The bolder design is derived from taking both colors and design elements from the field itself. This creates a mirror like effect that frames the overall composition in a unique and artistic way. In addition, the floral designs in the center of the border are outlined in an ivory white. This makes them pop and stand out as independent design patterns that correlate beautifully with the main design elements of the central field. Fascinatingly, the more delicate vine scroll and floral rug designs, that appear in the border, do not have an outline. This make them appear to recede into the background. This is a lovely addition to this design because it gives the beautiful folk art design rug a sense of foreground and background. This antique Irish Donegal rug was obviously designed by an artist. Gavin Morton took into account the smallest of details and picked the most perfect colors to convey the emotional impact that he desired.
