Oversized antique French Directoire Savonnerie carpet
Size: 16'0" × 25'9" (487 × 784 cm)
European rugs, renowned for their stately designs and textures, command the same caliber of appreciation afforded oriental oversized area rugs and antique carpets. This French Savonnerie carpet, like almost every other one created pre-20th century, were created for exclusive use of royalty. The field is a staggered array of repeating floral markers. The saturated color scheme of this stately tapestry is a warm tone of golden brown. The majestic central medallion motif is a floral medallion which is rose, celadon and beige colored and framed by a circular vine tendril wreath. The guard border is a rectangular, vine tendril frame design. The central medallion is laterally bookend, from top to base, by a symmetrical and beautiful swan design.
