About the Item

Made with hand-knotted wool, this 3x4 vintage Persian Gabbeh rug originating circa 1950-1960, is a bold new addition to Rug & Kilim’s curation of rare and collectible mid-century rugs of this provenance. On the Design: Admirers of the craft will know Gabbeh rugs of tribal provenance are one of the most primitivist and collectible shabby-chic styles in handmade nomadic rugs—among few left in the world today. Exceptional Gabbehs like this creation are known for thick, lush piles, vibrant colors and archaic geometric patterns. This vintage Gabbeh features bold chevron pattern, where rhythmic zigzags in ochre and navy create dynamic movement across the field. A central column of ivory diamonds, each punctuated with miniature rust-colored squares, provides a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal energy of the chevrons. The palette—deep indigo, golden ochre, ivory, and touches of oxidized red—demonstrates the sophisticated minimalism characteristic of tribal Turkish weaving traditions. Keen eyes for detail will admire how alive and rich these unusual colors remain, especially for this period of origin. An exemplar of rustic charm and folk art as much as handmade rugs, with versatile size and vast design applications. Condition: This vintage Gabbeh rug further enjoys an overall condition, with some slight color run, and a mild element of wear consistent with age.
