17th Century English Oak Wainscot Armchair, Circa 1680's

About the Item

Created just after the reign of Charles II when new styles of furniture appeared in England including eccentric twisted legs, velvet upholstery, ornately carved pieces, such as the chair you see here. This is a a solid, exceptionally well-preserved English Oak Wainscot Armchair. The back of the chair features a floral marquetry, so astonishingly well-executed that it is awe-inspiring to consider this nuanced inlay was created almost 350 years ago. This regal and impressive armchair is as sturdy today as it was three centuries and a crossed ocean ago. It is deeply carved, richly detailed and grand. It measures 40 ¾" tall, the arm height is 28 ¾", seat height is 17 ½", the chair is 24" wide at the front feet, 17.5" deep, the seat is 15" deep, and it weighs 35.5 pounds. There are abrasions on the right rear corner and smaller signs of age throughout, but there is nothing that compromises the beauty or stability of the piece and it is in far superior condition to other similar chairs from this era that I have encountered.

The bandage is glued to paper, but with a slight ripple on one side, emphasizing the dimensionality. Obviously, it's perfect for a washroom, a medical office...
