18th c. Swedish Rococo Period Arm Chair in Original Paint

About the Item

An 18th c Rococo period armchair from Lindome, Sweden, hand-scraped to the original paint and newly upholstered in linen. Lovely shell motif on the back and seat frame with cabriole legs terminating in claw-and-ball foot with shaped, H-stretcher base. The Rococo period followed the Baroque period and is often described as the final expression of the Baroque movement. The period began in the 1720's and continued through 1770. Rococo takes its name from the French word 'rocaille,' which means rock or broken shell. This period was characterized by elaborately carved, smaller and more functional pieces, the cabriole leg, and cherub, fruit, shell, flower, and scroll motifs.
