About the Item

This is an excellent 18th-century English Chippendale-style wingback chair. The wingback armchair was designed to be sat in front of a fireplace. The unique ‘wings’ prevented drafts of wind from slicing through while also trapping the heat from the fireplace. They were originally created with no fabric, instead just made of wood, however, over time the chairs became fully upholstered with springs and plush foam. This wingback has been designed in the Chippendale style; an 18th Century furniture period named after the cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale. It became widely popular and was the first style of furniture in England not named after a monarch. The Chippendale designs were often characterized by their simplicity and the use of high-quality wood. This wingback armchair has a frame made from walnut, an exotic wood praised for its durability and beautiful grain. Even though much of the armchair has upholstery, the touch of dark mocha brown walnut on the feet and legs elevates the piece. The legs have been done in the cabriole style with ribbon molding that ends in spade feet. This wingback chair has been clearly loved and used over time. The original upholstery was faded and torn. We wanted to revamp the upholstery to match the elegance of the silhouette. The seat cushion has been done in this polyester aqua blue droplet fabric. It was designed by Fabricut in ‘Spotted Leaf.’ The polyester gives it a soft velvet-like texture. Meanwhile, the back was upholstered in a rayon fabric with miniature raised pleats. Designer Stephanie Sarris chose this fabric from Pindler in ‘6781 Pleat.’ Both fabrics have an underlining water theme. The fabric on the cushion resembles water droplets while the ripples mimic the ripples of a running stream. It pulls the piece together beautifully. The softness of the cushion is wonderfully comfortable, and the deep shades of blue have a calming sense about them. By keeping to the original color palette, we have made sure not to heavily alter the original design. However, the new fabric is sure to blend better in modern homes. This wingback would now look great for any living room or office, whether there is a fireplace or not. Overall H= 44 in. W= 31 in. D= 27 in. 55 lbs. Additional measurements: Seat H (floor to seat)= 22 in. W= 21.5 in. D= 21 in Arm H (floor to arm)= 28 in., D=(back to front)= 7 in. Back H (seat to top)= 24 in. W= 17 in.

Reupholstered. Wear consistent with age and use. Sturdy and stable. The legs have nicks and scratches that add character. The front of the left leg has a minor repair. The patina from age enhances the tone of the walnut. Recently waxed. The fabrics are luxurious but not performance fabrics.
