1950s Pair of Lena Arm Chairs by Sven-Erik Fryklund for Hagafors Stolfabrik

About the Item

This is a pair of Lena armchairs designed by Sven-Erik Fryklund, originally designed in 1955. They were manufactured by the Swedish furniture company Hagafors Stolfabrik and distributed through the International Designers Group, a Mid-century era conglomerate that served as an exporter for several European furniture designers in the 1950’s-1960’s. These chairs have a birch wood construction and are surprisingly comfortable, not to mention scarcely seen within the US. The price listed is for the pair of chairs. Each chair measures 28 inches high, 21.5 inches wide, and 20 inches deep. They have a seat height of 17.75 in. The condition of the chairs is very good overall, though they remain vintage pieces that will show signs of age and use. See photos. It was said that the craftsmanship and skill of the Swedish woodworkers resulted in the highest quality chairs produced in Northern Europe in the 1950’s. They worked freehand without templates which was unheard of at the time. While these chairs may appear classically simple, their creation was anything but.
