About the Item

A very decorative and elaborate inlaid late 19th century folding scissors Savonarola armchair. With a carved foliate and twin peacock back rail, leopard head arms and inlaid with bone, mother of pearl, ebony and mixed woods. Great detail and good patina. The Savonarola chair is a type of folding chair with an X frame when viewed from the front or back. The chair was designed to fold so it was portable and used during campaigns or other outdoor pursuits. Labeled: Made in British India. A lovely late 17th century Spanish walnut and leather armchair, retaining its original leather seat and back, held by worn gilt brass studs. The back of the chair has two finely carved scroll acanthus finials above two broad arms, which are supported by carved balusters that run through into square front legs, these are joined by a high and heavily carved stretcher with two shaped stretchers joining the front and back legs at either side. Great patina to the wood and leather. In very good condition. The dimensions are: Height: 114cm (44.9in) Width: 64.5cm (25.4in) Depth: 53.5cm (21.1in) In good antique condition throughout with some signs of age.
