About the Item

The Barcelona chair was designed by Lilly Reich,2 with the participation of her partner and colleague Mies van der Rohe. The design was developed in the framework of reconstruction after the war. The ten years preceding the international exhibition in Barcelona were very hectic for European governments: education problems, social instability, large migrations, new territorial limits, the disappearance of monarchies, etc., a time in which nations tried, after the devastation, return to stability and stand strong before the world. Therefore, the designers had the enormous responsibility of producing a pavilion for the Barcelona exhibition that would herald the resurgence of German culture and showcase its successes. Mies and Reich created the chair, along with the matching ottoman and side table, for the German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. The chairs were so magnificent that they were used as thrones for the kings of Spain when they visited the Barcelona pavilion. The year after the International Exposition, Mies and Reich designed the Barcelona divan, following the same line as the chair, the ottoman and the table, for the department of the architect Philip Johnson. Mies and Reich created the chair, along with the matching ottoman and side table, for the German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. These pair of chairs are in a very good condition as a new one, the leather is a very good condition as new!!! They are icons of an interior and a refined aesthetic!!! a great opportunity!!
