American Victorian "Grotesque" Steambent Chair
About the Item
Designed by Edgar R. Somes, Head of Design, for the Michigan Chair Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The chair is a fine example of Victorian craftsmanship, a true collector’s piece. It maintains the maker’s label found on reverse.
Edgar R. Somes was the Head of Design for the Michigan Chair Company for five years, between 1900 and 1905, and during that time designed numerous furniture styles for the company. The “Grand Rapids Furniture Record,” from 1919, published an article about Somes and his career and called him the “Creator of Furniture Fashions.” Somes was trained as an architect, artist, musician, and painter and used his broad expertise to design high end chairs, sofas, and rockers. After leaving the Michigan Chair Company in 1905, he moved to several other furniture companies before establishing his own institution, the Edgar R. Somes Furniture Company, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1919, which was in operation until 1921.
