Ideally suited as an occasional or desk chair, the timber patina is sublime, the woven leather is pure style. The chair has been restored to include have the frame deep cleaned waxed and polish, the leather has been fully restored, it has been washed back, hand dyed six times, antiqued, sealed, waxed down and polished, it is the only chair in the world Dimensions Height:- 87.5cm Width:- 66.5cm Depth:- 63.5cm George Henry Walton (1867 – 1933) was a noted Glaswegian designer and architect. Greatly influenced by William Morris and James Whistler, he was one of the pioneers of the distinctive Glasgow Style of Arts and Crafts. In the 1880s, he assisted Charles Rennie Mackintosh with the interiors of Miss Cranston’s Tearooms. He also designed chairs and cabinets for Liberty. Walton was born into a talented, artistic family. Following his father’s death in 1879, Walton began work as a bank clerk, studying part-time at the Glasgow School of Art. While here, he became involved with Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Glasgow Style of design. By 1888, George Walton was working with Mackintosh, and was commissioned to decorate a new smoking room in one of the Cranston tea rooms. This inspired him to establish his own interior design company of George Walton & Co, making furniture, stained glass and panelling for homes and churches. In 1896 he was commissioned to furnish Cranston’s Buchanan Street tearoom, following which he set up a house and studio in Bayswater, London. Here, he undertook various commissions, including the furnishing of several Eastman Kodak showrooms in London and Europe, which brought him great acclaim. Walton opened further workshops in York and his hometown of Glasgow between 1898 and 1900, following which he began designing entire houses, having learned construction from his colleague Fred Rowntree. In 1903 he resigned from George Walton & Co, and by 1905 the company had been folded by its partners. Walton continued working as a private architect and designer, but never regained recognition. By the 1930s he was reduced to designing textiles in Carlisle, but the interest in Art Nouveau was at an end. He died unemployed in Hythe, Kent, in 1933. The Liberty of London department store, located in the fashionable west end of London in the United Kingdom, has been selling luxury items since 1875. From leather footstools in the shape of a hippo to elegantly hand-carved Moroccan coffee tables, there’s something to please every discerning collector. And while it became a reputable retailer over time, the original Liberty & Co. was a pivotal force in the development of the Aesthetic, Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movements. As the champion of eclectic design throughout the centuries, Liberty continues to collaborate with designers to produce covetable interior fashion and accessories.

Arthur Liberty was born in 1843 in Buckinghamshire, England. His father, a draper, encouraged him to apprentice as a draper at age 16. Instead, he took an offer to work at Farmer and Rogers, a women’s fashion store. After ten years, he decided to strike out on his own. In 1875 he borrowed money from his father-in-law and leased a small store on the very prominent Regent Street, naming it the East India House.

Liberty’s store was very eclectic. It served as an emporium for Eastern imports, with a wildly varied collection of ornaments, fabrics and objects d’art — including imported antiques — on offer. In London, there was already a demand for and an interest in imported goods from India and elsewhere, so his business concept was an immediate success. He repaid his loan in less than two years and continually expanded by buying up all the buildings on his side of the street. His company was so successful that even the original Victoria and Albert Museum purchased Eastern textiles for its collection from his store.

By 1890, the firm came to be known as Liberty & Company. Liberty died in 1917, but the business continued to thrive. In 1924, the current iteration — and now world-famous — of the store was constructed. It was built in the Tudor Revival style and the structure's frame was made of wood salvaged from two British warships. In the 1950s and '60s, the store, now known as Liberty’s, helped spark the counterculture youth movements of the era as beatniks and hippies purchased fabrics and furnishings from this iconic store.
