About the Item

2 oak Art Deco armchairs from the 1920s. Designed and made during the Haagse School period, probably Hendrik Wouda. The heavy and sturdy chairs are in very good condition. The imitation leather on the seat and back is attached with upholstery nails. This leather is of a later period. Both chairs have been polished. The Haagse School is the name for a group of designers who mostly lived and worked in The Hague and who mainly focused on interior and furniture design. They represent the business, functional direction in Art Deco. Their furniture and interiors were considered very modern by many in the 1920s and 1930s. The functionality of the furniture is considered more important by the designers of the Hague School than the form. A shape that is characterized by simple, clean contours and linearity.
