Dutch Art Deco Haagse School Armchair, 1920s
About the Item
An antique architectural Dutch armchair in solid oak and an extraordinary design. The chair has a robust look and is heavy in weight. Still it has a modest size and height and is be very suitable as a side chair for styling.
The shape of the chairs' back legs and the tilted, rather low backrest strongly remind of armchair designs by Frits Spanjaard (1889 - 1978). The pointed front legs are reminiscent of designs by Hendrik Wouda. Spanjaard was greatly influenced by Wouda, after they met at Pander and sons furniture makers.
This chair may have been a one off experimental design or a prototype.
One can imagine that the design wasn't suitable to produce in mass, for it's rather complicated and heavy.
Frits Spanjaard studied engineering at the Technical College in Delft. Here he developed a great interest in interior design and was introduced to the work of the English Arts and Crafts,
He started as a draftsman at the Hague H. Pander & Sons. There he met (interior) architect Hendrik Wouda (1885-1946), by whom he was greatly influenced. Both were inspired by the innovative designs of Frank Lloyd Wright.
