Dutch Art Deco De Stijl/Haagse School set of chairs, 1920s

About the Item

Unique set of four early (around 1910-1920) Haagse School dining chairs with De Stijl influences. Very austere and functional design with clean lines and oval shaped recesses that operate as handles. Great in an out of the box or minimalist interior as well as in an interior with organic and earthy shapes and sustainable materials. Naturally also the ideal addition to interiors with other early modernist or De Stijl pieces. The chairs are made from solid beech wood. They are rather heavy chairs, about 8 kilograms each. They've been carefully cleaned with respect to each chairs' own character and patina. Professionally reupholstered in genuine leather in almost the same colour as the wood, with a soft padding underneath. De Stijl was an influential art movement that emerged in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 20th century. The movement, also known as "Neoplasticism," was founded in 1917 by artists such as Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondriaan, and Gerrit Rietveld. De Stijl strove for a radical simplification of art and design, and it emphasized geometric shapes and austere composition.
