Art Deco Pair of Austrian Walnut and Velvet Cockpit Armchairs

About the Item

We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Elegant and refined pair of Austrian cockpit armchairs; the massive and solid structure is made of walnut briar; the seats are firmly fixed to the circular base of the wooden frame; the rear part of the armchairs is fully occupied by the curved back; the main feature of the cockpit shape in armchairs or chairs of this type is the impression that the seat itself wants to surround or embrace us, a pleasant feeling of comfort. These types of armchairs have a compact design, not at all bulky and offer impeccable comfort; they find their ideal location in the bedroom, but also in other rooms of the house, or in professional offices, waiting rooms, and lounge settings. They were made in an artisan workshop in Vienna between 1930 and 1935 in walnut briar; the briar is a kind of root and looks like a set of twisted wood fibers, which give the wood it's characteristic hardness and compactness. The briar has also an aesthetic value, since, thanks to the many natural veins always different, it is very elegant and refined. Every briarwood object is an absolutely unique product. The most common briarwood is Walnut, a characteristic of luxury furniture. Our elegant armchairs reflect in their essential lines the typical taste of the Viennese Secession. The Secession is an artistic movement founded in Vienna on April 3, 1897; this movement, which included painters, sculptors, and architects (Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Max Kurzweil, Josef Hoffmann, Joseph Maria Olbrich, and others) aspired to the rebirth of arts and crafts, to create works that would respond to the concept of a total work of art; The Secession artists opposed the existing artistic paradigms and wished, above all, to explore the possibilities of art outside the confines of academic tradition with the aim of initiating a new era in the art world, their motto was "to each time its art and to art its freedom"; the influence of the movement on the arts lasted until the beginning of World War II. The armchairs in the wooden part have been treated with ancient manual techniques of restoration, the original fabric was very deteriorated, so we proceeded to have them reupholstered in Italy by a skilled Florentine master craftsman who used a fine black velvet with a high resistance to wear, bringing to life with skill and wisdom two objects full of style and personality that are now in excellent condition. Measures diameter cm.60, height cm.67, seat cm.46. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.

We kindly suggest that you read the entire description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our objects. Elegant and refined pair of Italian armchairs; the strong frame is made of wood, the legs are painted black, and the seat is large, wide, and comfortable also thanks to the particular shape of the two large armrests; their design is energetic and compact. They were made between 1960 and1965 between Meda and Mariano Comense in Brianza (a prolific industrial and artisan area of Lombardy Italy) where there is a high production of designer furniture made with great craftsmanship. The armchairs have been restored and we have also upholstered them with Designer Guild's iconic and sophisticated velvet with a "Janneret" pattern with geometric cut and interlocking lines. One of the company's most popular fabrics. (see original Guild set photo). The entire work was handcrafted with skill and precision by an old Master craftsman from Prato (Italy). We would like to remind you that the city of Prato is considered the largest textile center in the world, its craftsmen and companies, highly specialized, are a benchmark for creativity, quality, and excellence. We kindly suggest that you read the whole description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Very comfortable and elegant upholstered armchair; the frame is very solid with sturdy legs made of polished and brushed brass; the seat is deliberately low but large and comfortable; the wide overall appearance has soft and pleasing lines, perfect for conveying a feeling of comfort and well-being. The armchair was made between 1960 and 1963 by an artisan workshop in Meda (Milan, Italy) that collaborated with several Lombard architects; for the creation of the armchair, the artisans were inspired by architect Marco Zanuso, following his design. Marco Zanuso (1916-2001) was among the greatest interpreters of the culture of the modern, as an architect, designer, and university lecturer; he was one of the first designers to take an interest in the problems of product industrialization, going beyond the aesthetic question to incorporate technological, industrial, distribution and communication variables. The form of an object intended for serial reproduction, according to Zanuso, is thus a synthesis of opportunities, experimentation, and innovations located in the concrete process that links creativity, production, and sociocultural context. His countless creations include the Lady armchair, and the Antropus armchair...

A commanding matching pair of Art Deco lounge chairs in a rich navy blue upholstery. The armchairs have high backs and large shapely column arms with pleated fronts that surround the generous seats. Both chairs are raised on oak feet and finished with brass castors. The castors can be removed easily if the chairs need to sit flat on the floor. The armchairs have been fully restored and stripped back to the solid oak frame for upholstery with a new coil spring base, with hessian lining and calico coverings added before being finished in velvet upholstery. The lounge chairs came from a fine country house on the English and Scottish borders that was regularly frequented by the Welsh poet and writer, Dylan Thomas. The chairs are presented in their original condition and match the original design of the Art Deco suite before being restored to their full glory by Pointers Antiques...
