About the Item

We kindly suggest that you read the whole description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. We would like to preface this by saying that the real color of the two chairs is the one in the last photo of the chair, as it was taken with homogeneous natural light; the colors of the other photos taken in the studio are as close as possible to reality, but the color rendering is highly dependent on the light with which they were taken and on how the velvet texture responds to artificial light (lighter in vertical surfaces, darker in horizontal ones). Beautiful and elegant pair of French "Bridge" model chairs; they are made of sturdy, precious oak; the entire frame is built to be solid and functional; the legs, compact and strong, have a slender and pleasing cabriole design; the arms are curved and high to give more room for seating; the backrest is very comfortable and set at the right height for comfortable seating. They were created between 1948 and 1950 by a skilled master craftsman from Nancy, a city in France's Lorraine region; the city was famous for its school of art and design called "Ecole de Nancy." This school played a significant role in the development of the furniture styles known as "Art Nouveau" and "Art Deco" which were popular in the early 20th century. The upholstery was badly damaged, so we had them upholstered and completely reupholstered by an old artisan in Florence who used a sturdy velvet with a refined purple color and yellow trimmings of trimmings; in removing the old upholstery we found, attached to the wood, a label (see photo) from an old Toulon chair carcass factory, which made 17 of these chairs in March 1930. Toulon was a historic site for chair production in France and contributed to the development of traditional furniture in Lorraine, based on the skills of carpenters, carvers, and cabinetmakers. Chair shells (carcasses des sieges) were made from hardwood (beech or ash) and were supplied unfinished, that is, untreated wood. The upholsterer would make the seat, paint, or patina the chair frame, and upholster it with the desired cover. French "Bridge" chairs are a type of traditional chair named after the card game of Bridge, which is very popular in France; these chairs are famous for their elegant and refined design. They are made of solid wood with fine details; one of the main features of this type of chair is the high back, this peculiarity provides ergonomic support for the back and helps to provide comfortable seating during long games of Bridge or other sedentary activities. The seat of Bridge chairs is also generally padded to provide more comfort (we repeat that in our chairs the seat padding has been reupholstered new). Some versions of these chairs may have armrests (like ours), which provide additional comfort and support for the arms during use. The legs often have a slight curvature, which lends elegance and stability to the structure. In addition to being used for playing Bridge, these chairs are also suitable for dining or as additional seating in different areas of the home. The restored chairs are in excellent condition. Measurements width cm.59, depth cm.48, height cm.83, seat cm.45. For all our shipments we use special packing materials (custom-made wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the items.
