Auke Komter for Metz & Co Rare Armchair in Walnut Plywood

About the Item

Auke Komter for Metz & Co, chair, beech, plywood, walnut, The Netherlands, 1930s This stately chair was designed by Dutch Architect Auke Komter in the early 1930s. The armchair is made from a solid beech frame with bend plywood shell that flows from the seat to the back. Komter was inspired by the designs of Alvar Aalto and Le Corbusier (who he trained with as a young architect) and began experimenting with materials and techniques in his own work. Most of his experimental designs were only produced in small series. This particular chair is part of one of a small edition and therefore a rare find. Auke Komter was born in 1904 and trained with Meintema and Duiker en Boeken in the Netherlands and Le Corbusier in France. Especially his time with Le Corbusier was a determining factor for his later design aesthetics. Komter is considered to be a key figure in the second generation of the Dutch Functionalist School. Together with a group of young architects, Komter initiates 'Group 32', a group of artists not only concerned with the aesthetic value of a building but also its vital importance in larger socio-economic and cultural developments. In short, a group of architects with big ideologies. Please note that this item is in good, used condition with wear and scratches. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
