Bentwood armchair produced by the Fischel company between 1890 and 1910

About the Item

Bentwood armchair no. 18 produced by the Fischel company in Niemes (Bohemia) between 1890 and 1910. The wood is in good condition, as is the canework, which is very different from the usual canework on this type of seat. The tops of the front legs are finished with small turned wooden capitals. There is a manufacturer's paper label on the underside of the seat. After Thonet's patents expired in 1869, various competitors appeared on the bentwood furniture market. Fischel and Köhn were the best known and most productive, not hesitating to draw inspiration from, or even copy, certain models produced by Thonet. Fischel started out in Germany, before opening a factory in Alsace, France. The company was sold after the death of Alexander Fischel in 1895, but kept the same name, which had already become a guarantee of quality.
