A superb pair of Biedermeier period walnut armchairs from Berlin, Germany c.1825. The impressive architectural presence of these chairs showcases the design aesthetic of the Biedermeier period to an exceptional degree. Each chair possesses an impressive linear appearance with the subtle touches of a change in material, change in colour, and shift in profile that when combined give a piece of Biedermeier furniture its distinctive appearance and appeal. Please look at the gorgeous walnut chosen for the chairs and the precise manner in which the movement of the grain has been applied to the surface on all four sides of the chairs. The upper back has book matched panels of walnut laid side by side to continue the pattern horizontally while the sides and front have the walnut with its straight patterned grain placed to appear vertically. While the beauty of the walnut is unmistakeable also note the front legs. Each leg has a square column that reaches the floor where it is banded on all four sides with a moulded edge done with timber lacquered to resemble polished ebony. This darkest black with its reflective shine is a startling contrast to the warm colour of the walnut and this visually sharp difference is a notable facet of Biedermeier design. Atop each square column of the front legs is a fully rounded circular column also finished in a lacquered black timber reminiscent of the structural supports seen in the grandest of ancient classical civilizations including Greece and Rome. These antique elements were well known to educated persons and their use in furniture imbued them with all the positive attributes of those ancient peoples and their respective cultures. Behind each column is a vertical plane of walnut that provides support for the arm as it connects to the seat but it also gives a visual backdrop to the column when the chairs are viewed from the front and sides. The arms on each of these two chairs are cut from a single piece of timber and have a slightly turned up scroll end where they are attached to the back of the chair while the scroll is turned slightly down at the front of each arm to embrace the top of each column. This profile softens the appearance of the chairs and mimics the placement of an arm at rest on the chair. The resemblance of these chairs to a throne is deliberate and refers to this period in history that followed the terrible upheaval in the late eighteenth century into the early nineteenth century when regimes were violently changed and bloodshed was a constant fact of life. By the 1820's stability was widespread and there was a desire for furniture that was not modeled on aristocratic design but reflected the new age. Construction methods allowed a much greater amount of goods to be offered than ever before and the public was eager to acquire them for personal use. Please note that these chairs are finished on all four sides with the back legs in a sabre form (not only does this shape provide great structural support but they are modeled after the sword known as a "sabre") that completes the overall appearance in a pleasing fashion. Chairs and tables in an early nineteenth century interior were always designed to be moved around a room depending upon where they were needed. Unlike our modern interiors where everything is set in place and rarely changes these earlier spaces were used by individuals as well as groups and accommodated a variety of activities. Therefore they are always attractive no matter what angle they are seen. These chairs have been freshly upholstered in a black cotton velvet on the front with a surprising geometric patterned fabric on the reverse chosen to enhance the beauty of the walnut timber. The dramatic impact of these chairs is as potent today as when they were first created and will give a modern interior a unique presence.
