Circa 1770 George III Fauteuil or Open Arm Chair

About the Item

Circa 1770 George III London made fauteuil or open arm chair in the French taste. An extraordinarily fine period example of carved mahogany retaining much of its original black paint with gilt details. Repetitive tendril, demi-acanthus leaf, and beaded borders; central apron rosette; straight, tapered, fluted legs are surmounted by flat panels which have rosettes for the front legs; ending in molded, carved cuffs - all carving details are gilded. The gracious arms are well molded & whorl carved at the sides before they sweep down to the seat. Note the notched crest rail providing additional visual interest & movement. Well shaped seat. Overall wear to the paint & gilding, particularly pronounced on the reverse of the back. As found upholstery. 25.25" w., 21.5" d., 38" h.
