Modern Utopia Armchair, Silver and Black Velvet Handmade for October Gallery

Guided by the mantra “Design is significance. Form is the result,” furniture studio DRAMA pushes beyond the conventional limits of contemporary design, producing highly original, visually expressive pieces. 

DRAMA was founded by designer Adérito Soares, who left his native Venezuela to seek refuge from the country’s economic and political strife. Now living and working in Porto, Portugal, as DRAMA’s creative director, Soares says he “seeks to create a utopia of significant pieces, which can give rise to distinct and not immediate interpretations.” 

In recent years, DRAMA has collaborated with Portuguese furniture manufacturer October Gallery to create a collection of conceptual, furniture-as-art pieces. These include their brutalist EGO sideboard, made from white alderwood and consisting of a front panel mesh denoting an “unfinished sculpture.” Other notable pieces include the hedonistic Utopia armchair upholstered in black velvet with silver leaf; the bronze and copper leaf Utopia console table; and the Utopia coffee table, a “sun-like” form with asymmetrical wood and gold leaf panels and a marble top. 

DRAMA’s pieces have been exhibited at major shows around the world, garnering acclaim from critics and collectors alike. In 2018, the studio presented their Portal Triptych floor mirror at Design Shanghai.
