Dutch Colonial Javanese Teak Armchair with Rattan and Triglyph Inspired Motifs

About the Item

Evoking the quiet refinement of early 20th-century colonial design, this Javanese Dutch colonial armchair offers a graceful balance of form and function. Crafted from solid teak, the chair showcases a warm patina developed over time, enhancing the depth and richness of its natural grain. The slightly slanted backrest is inset with tightly woven rattan and framed by a pierced crest rail, adding lightness and visual texture to the piece. Open arms extend outward in a clean, architectural line, supported by vertical splats featuring triglyph-inspired carvings—a nod to classical design filtered through a tropical lens. The seat, also handwoven in rattan, rests on a square teak frame with four gently tapered legs ending in softly rounded feet. A classic H-form stretcher provides additional support and subtle decorative rhythm. This armchair is both sturdy and elegant, offering a timeless silhouette that works beautifully in a wide range of interiors. Whether used as a desk chair in a study, a statement piece in an entryway, or paired with a low side table in a reading nook, it brings a sense of relaxed structure to any space. Its scale and open design also make it a strong option for bedrooms or guest rooms, where it can double as a chair for dressing or quiet moments of retreat. We currently have two available, each sold individually. Their understated design and enduring craftsmanship make them versatile additions to both traditional and eclectic interiors.
