Early 18th Century French Régence Carved Armchair

About the Item

Large and impressive early 18th century French Régence carved armchair. The Régence was the period in French history between 1715 and 1723, when King Louis XV was a minor and the land was governed by Philippe d'Orléans. This high quality piece has tapestry upholstery and was typically used with a Mazarin desk/bureau. Constructed with high quality oak wood it is strong enough for it to be used daily. It is very comfortable because of its large seat. Although seats were generally stuffed and not sprung yet during this period, many had loose feather-filled cushions that made them feel very comfortable. Armchair design was led by the French and this one is certainly in the category of a fine piece made for nobles. Hand-carved.
