About the Item
Edoardo Gellner armchairs, fur, leather and wood, Italy, 1952, set of two.
These armchairs are the outcome of the creative minds of Edoardo Gellner and Carlo Scarpa, a unique piece site specific for Casa Menardi in Cortina d'Ampezzo, in the Dolomites, Italy. Carlo Scarpa, the father of Tobia Scarpa, collaborated with Gellner on the house's architecture. The Italian duo created a series of bespoke pieces site specific for Casa Menardi. The chair's foundation lies in two imposing elements of richly colored brown leather elements and a wooden base arranged parallelly. The solid structure, conceived and crafted for a chalet in the Dolomites, evokes a sense of strength and stability, a hallmark of Brutalist architecture which the two Italian architects and designers belong to. The key to its visual definition lies in the ingenious interplay of textures, which gives a very elegant and comforting aesthetic break. The vertical side panels, crafted from brown leather, provide a stark contrast to the warm and soft off-white sheepskin that upholsters the armchair. The headrests on either side, playfully juxtapose the sheepskin's softness with the brown leather's firmness. These unexpected details add extra personality and identity to the designers' commitment to pushing boundaries. These two armchairs represent a collectible piece for historical design collectors.
Our atelier restored and reupholstered the armchairs. We offer custom restoration and special reupholstering on request. Contact us to create the object you desire.

Charles Dudouyt Easy Chairs, 1940s, Set of 2
By Charles Dudouyt

Charles Dudouyt easy chairs, straw and wood, France, 1940s, set of two.
Recalling the turned chair model, Charles Dudouyt created these carved chairs as 'fireside' chairs, hence the low seats. Using playful geometries and construction, he crafted the wooden structure in Art Deco forms. The seats' original straw is preserved and creates a charming contrast with the dark wooden structure. The legs are joined by crosspieces, enhancing the square shape of the design. Dudouyt enriched the typical French straw chair...
