English Mahogany and Leather Reclining Metamorphic Campaign Chair, 19th Century

About the Item

A rare and exceptional selection of British Campaign seating furniture, this gorgeous reclining chair entirely disassembles for safe and convenient transport and storage. It has been beautifully preserved with nearly perfect purity throughout, retaining all of the original hardware and a very early and likely original tufted olive leather covering. The front legs have a brass-reinforced six-position notch system that allows the chair to be adjusted for the sitter. It is not difficult to disassemble the chair, first by unclipping the leather upholstery at the top where it hangs from cast brass hooks, then unhooking the leather under the chair bottom, unscrewing the left knob on the reclining bar and removing the bar completely, allowing the chair to then lay back carefully before folding both front arms/legs inward. The ingenuity of the Campaign furniture is so compelling, unusual and practical - but as heavily used and functional objects, few of these metamorphic chairs remain and even fewer in totally pure and exquisite condition. This is a particularly fine acquisition for the serious collector. Provenance: Acquired from Gary Young 18th and 19th century antiques, Centreville, MD in 2009 for a private Maryland collection Measurements: 37" H x 40" D x 26" W x 13 1/2" H to seat [when measured at the third notch position] Condition report: Retaining a fine early historical surface with beautiful overall patina; age appropriate wear including some chipping to the knobs, surface scars, stains to the leather, etc.; retaining entirely original hardware, original leather covering and in firm, stabile and fully functional condition.

POLYCHROMED WROUGHT-IRON AND SADDLE-LEATHER SAVONAROLA CHAIR With cerule form, probably early 20th century Item # 311ESB30P ** Sold individually, but we may have up to 4 of these chairs available ** A very compelling form, this classical "Savonarola" chair is crafted entirely by hand using forged iron that shows every trace of the blacksmith's work throughout the surface. They are in a cerule form with hammered spade feet, the legs joined with a central pivot point at the center of each cyma-curvature, this joint decorated with a wonderful iron rosette on both the front and back. The seat and seat-back are slung with leather that is affixed with rawhide lacing, the seat-back decorated with two beautifully formed finials with ruby-red and part gilt highlights to the surface. These are being sold individually, but we acquired these as a set of four and may still have several available. The images are of only one of the four chairs, but they are all identical in overall condition and form. Measurements: 33 1/2" H x 18 3/8" D x 26" W; 19 1/4" H to seat Condition Report: Distressed wrought-iron with loss to polychroming and part gilding throughout; incredibly strong and stable; leather is modern and in good condition with only minor wear.
