About the Item

A rare opportunity to own a piece of British history. A Regency period bamboo ‘Brighton Pavilion’ chair. Early 19th century. An exquisite chair with stunning detail. After comparing every last tiny and individual detail, we believe this actual chair was sold by Christie’s in 2015 as part of their Lambert Art Collection Sale. Baroness Marion Lambert (1943-2016) was a prolific art collector and together with her husband, Baron Philippe Lambert, amassed a Fine collection of art and antiques. She sourced this chair from Shield & Allen, an important London antiques dealership in 1976. The Royal Brighton Pavilion, famous world wide, began life as a simple lodging house but over 35 years, starting in the late 18th century, it grew into the magnificent oriental palace we see today. Guided by a grand vision, King George IV (then Prince George) sought a refuge away from the stuffy formal etiquette of London. Architects Henry Holland and John Nash were tasked with creating such a building and in 1817, George hired designers Frederick Crace and Robert Jones to create magnificent and opulent interiors inspired by the oriental. Several of these chairs (some in a less sound condition than this one!) can be seen in the grand hallways of Brighton Pavilion today. So many chairs similar to this are described as 'Brighton Pavilion' chairs when they are actually 'loosely in the style of'. This example is not one of those. Ideally not an ‘everyday’ chair as it does have some fragility due to its age. One small loss of cane to lower rear section, visible in last photograph. Other very minor losses. Price includes courier delivery to mainland UK.
