About the Item

ETIENNE HENRI MARTIN (1904-1998) Two Series 1500 armchairs
Mobilier National ARC design, TFM edition, France, circa 1964 Tubular frame, foam, fabric of your choice (model and color)
H. 76 cm (seat 32 cm) x W. 74 cm x D. 82 cm 8 available Reference :
Collection Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne Métropole
Collection, Musée de la Ville de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Montigny- le-Bretonneux, 2007 Tubular metal frame covered in foam, fabric-covered, shaped like wide ribbons, folded into a hairpin to create the seat, rising at a right angle, and falling back into a hairpin for the backrest. This armchair is part of Etienne-Henri Martin's "Programme 1500," consisting of seats (armchairs, ottomans, corner units) and a coffee table. In August 1969, Étienne-Henri Martin, who was in talks with the TFM company (Thévenin, Fert et Mayet), contacted the Mobilier National (National Furniture Association) to request assistance from the ARC. He wanted to have a prototype armchair made for publication. The model was made with materials that had become traditional in the late 1960s: a tubular frame stretched with jersey over foam. Simple in shape, the designer says he got the idea while folding a metro ticket. This chair, with its floating seat, is extremely flexible. It was produced until 1976 by TFM and then by the Mangau-Atal company. Literature: - A Plea for Contemporary Furniture: The Research and Creation Workshop of the Mobilier National. [exhibition, National Tapestry Gallery in Beauvais - March 15 to September 15, 2001] - Zuber-Cupissol (Myriam), Mobilier National, 1964-2004: 40 Years of Creation.
