Georgian Mahogany Gainsborough Open Armchair attr. John Cobb

About the Item

Very fine George II mahogany open armchair of generous proportions, attributed to John Cobb and/or the St. Martin’s Lane Syndicate. With upholstered seat and back, the back having an unusual bombe shape with padded arms and carved show-wood supports, the seat supported by four carved cabriole legs. Circa 1755. Similar examples: Christie’s NY, 12/15/15 lot 189, Christie’s London, 11/29/01, Lot 90, Christie’s London, 4/19/01, Lot 60 show related traits to this example. Seat height. 15 1/2”
