About the Item

A rare and strikingly impressive, excellent quality Georgian style oxblood-red leather wingback Chesterfield armchair on casters in lovely vintage condition. Retailed through Harrods of London and produced in England in the early 1990s by the furnishers of Downing Street and The Houses of Parliament, this superb armchair will add gorgeous colouring, outstanding comfort and a refined aesthetic of bygone quality and stately grandeur to any interior. Generously sized and reassuringly heavy, the standout wingback armchair was produced by Mill Brook Furnishing (now Millbrook Beds), who have supplied and upholstered furniture for the Palace of Westminster and Downing Street for many years. Exuding outstanding quality throughout, it is in the classic oxblood colouring – when you think of the archetypal distinguished wingback Chesterfield, you’d be hard pressed to think of a better one than this. This is a first-rate chair, as one can tell from sitting in it as well as appreciating it. The overall design and craftsmanship are outstanding, and as the 1991 maker’s label attests, the beautiful quality leather is stuffed with ‘feather and down’ for the utmost comfort. We especially admire the all-round proportions of this chair, which is impressively sized whilst still being extremely attractive. From the deep ‘Chesterfield’ folded button-back, the detail of the buttoned lower apron and folded leather frill, to the perfect curvature of the scrolled arms and wings and the hand-tacked brass stud finishing, there is so much to admire. And we love the modernised usefulness of the quality brass casters for ease of movement, especially when combined with the shapely wooden legs – both extremely handy and attractive features, often overlooked in the production of most, even excellent quality, wingback armchairs. All in all this is a stunning piece and a fantastic example of Georgian style wingback armchairs. Exuding the quality and style one would expect of such a high-end retailed and prestigious maker, it won’t fail to make a knockout impression and will add elegant splendour and sophistication to any setting. CONDITION This armchair is in good-to-very-good vintage condition. Solid, sturdy, structurally sound and expertly crafted, it is plump, very comfortable and the excellent quality leather has been treated to keep it rejuvenated and looking its best. The leather has some minor to-be-expected nicks to the edges on the sides and back and wear to the rear left piping on the cushion, which can’t be really seen when in place. Clearly well looked after, the armchair was pride of place in a gentleman’s estate and has been in storage for some time, where upon other pieces have been placed on it, leaving three indents to the leather, which may well all but disappear over time – one to the left arm and one to the top of each wing. Overall it's a rare, comfortable and attractive Georgian style wingback Chesterfield armchair of excellent quality in lovely vintage condition and if well looked after it should remain so for many more decades to come – please see the photos.
