About the Item

Illum Wikkelsø, high back chair, mahogany, leather, metal, Denmark, 1950s. This classic lounge chair by Illum Wikkelsø is a wonderful example of Scandinavian design from the Midcentury period. The unique lines and shapes of the design are striking and the tapered wooden legs complement its shape beautifully. Highly comfortable and qualitative armchair. Forest green leather is used for the upholstery and matches the dark mahogany wooden frame perfectly. Metal studs emphasize the lines of the chair in a dignified manner. The chair has a worldly grandeur yet remain simple and functional at the same time. Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) was trained as a carpenter and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. He first worked for the Danish furniture maker Jacob Kjær and the architect Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard until 1954 when he opened his studio on the outskirts of Aarhus. Here he designed especially simple and elegant seating with great functionality now considered classics of Danish furniture design. The style of his work varies from Kaare Klint's classicism Kaare Klints to the soft organic craft by Arne Jacobsen. Please note that we advise reupholstery before use.
