Italian 18th Century Renaissance Savonarola Chair in Amazingly Carved Walnut

About the Item

Impressive and fully original Renaissance Savonarola chair in amazingly carved walnut, it looks simply stunning. The backrail, the armrests start and ending, the front and back feet, the central crossing are all decorated with incredibly hand-carved figures, mainly lion heads, but also the Venetian symbol, and with the other parts of this unique piece that are also highly decorated with detailed carvings. The lion heads where used to display the power/might of the one who used the chair. This piece was created in the 18th century, most likely 1790s-1800s in the Venice area and is in great conditions for its 200 years. Savonarola chair is a type of folding chair with an X frame when viewed from the front or back and the title Savonarola comes from the name of Italian Renaissance Dominican friar, Girolamo Savonarola, who is renowned for his clash with tyrannical rulers and corrupt clergy. To fold this interestingly beautiful chair you must first remove the back rail, which simply slides upward out of slots in the arms, then push the arms together to fold. An amazing piece adding that unique feeling, importance and elegance to any room, a real museum piece.
