Impressive & fully original pair of Florentine Renaissance Savonarola chairs in carved birch.
Armrests ending with two amazing hand-carved lion heads. The lion heads where used to display the power/might of the one who used the chair. The backrest is also highly decorated with detailed carvings. The chair can be folded in a matter of seconds , fully made from solid carved & bent birch. Amazing craftsmanship.
About : Savonarola Chair The term derives from the chair on which the Savonarola used to sit was still kept in the convent of San MarCo in Florence The X-formed chair was copied from an ancient Roman form in almost every European country. Also known as a Savonarola, the chair is named for the Italian Renaissance religious zealot Girolamo Savonarola. Originally used as hall chairs, they were more for decoration than actual seating.
