Set of Antique 19th Century French Corner Chairs Breton Brittany Renaissance Oak

About the Item

Pair of Breton Brittany renaissance revival corner armchairs in solid oak mid 19th century France. Two beautiful provincial style French antique corner chairs made of solid oak, with carved wooden seats, openwork wooden backrests with the ubiquitous Breton Brittany ``ships wheel`` and turned legs with stretcher assembly. Lovely aged patina! Fine craftsmanship and exquisite detail throughout typical of the Breton region, featuring carved floral motifs, turned pillars and perfectly carved finials. In good antique condition, wear consistent with age and use, one old restored crack in seat. The Breton style is as distinctive as its special culture and easily recognizable due to its very ornate carvings. Historically, the local economy in Brittany was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime activities, so one often finds circles and ship's wheels as a common decorative motif in the Brittany Style of antique furniture.
