Italian Modern Armchairs with Brass Legs, Italy, 1960s

About the Item

The postwar boom years of the 1950s through to the 1960s were one of the periods of greatest influence of Italian designers. Design in the 1960s paved a way to a more aesthetical approach to products as opposed to its utilitarian predecessors, resulting in exceptional pieces like these armchairs. The idea of freedom expressed so flamboyantly in America was one of the most influential factors on Italians and therefore design as well. This American influence encouraged a more consumer and leisurely attitude towards life. The newly available production techniques and materials like plastic and metal introduced vibrant, colourful effects instead of the traditional wood and fabrics combination used before. As such, these armchairs have a sculptural, “free” look dictated by the shape of the backs and arms. They have a similar curvature that creates a welcoming, stylish appearance that preserves the elegance inherent in Italian design. The chairs are supported by tapered brass legs that are splayed for perfect stability. The patinated brass legs help to achieve an interesting, yet harmonious contrast with the bodies: the strong curves and proportions of the chairs are perfectly balanced by the thin, sleek look. From all angles, these armchairs offer beautiful textures and eye-catching forms. To enhance it even further, the bodies are upholstered in a textured fabric that accentuates the thick seats and pronounced curves. This pair of armchairs combines Italian elegance and modern aesthetics resulting in a timeless look which is full of modern energy that will endure for generations. This is also thanks to their exceptional visual quality and uncompromising level of craftsmanship. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use.
