About the Item

Probably circulating from the middle of the 19th Century, this beautiful Italian Neoclassical arm chair is intricately carved in the pierced splat. The hand tooling marks remain mostly unfinished in the secondary portions of the carvings, the uneven scrapes of the chisel still evident in the crevices. Gilt highlights bring the carved twisting rope molding to the forefront and nicely frame the chair on all outer edges. The form is dominated by subtle curvature, the shallow dip of the arm mirrored in the ever so slight outward splay of the leg. These arms are finished in Ram head capitals, each carefully carved with raised horns and gilded faces. They elevate the chair most handsomely and make it a visually rich and interesting addition to the interior - coupled with the mellowed and worn velour seat, this is a simply wonderful find for anyone decorating in an Old World taste. It is an eclectic piece that adds so much to a well arranged interior, while remaining very sturdy and comfortable for regular use in the home. Measurements: 21 3/4" W x 33 7/8" H x 20 1/2" D; 17 1/2" H to seat Condition Report: Very old oxidized finish, some inpainting to gilt highlights. Old restorations to joints, the chair remaining in very strong condition for regular use and enjoyment. Inactive pest damage. The fabric is an old velour that we would certainly not change, as it is mellowed and wonderful; some spots of velour loss and minor discoloration, but overall in quite serviceable condition.
