Large George III Walnut Gainsborough Chair with Original Fretwork c. 1760
About the Item
A good solid walnut early George III library chair made by hand in c. 1760 and in excellent original condition.
Lovely to see the open fretwork – of Chinese Chippendale form – to each of the stretchers and the front legs are beautifully shaped with channel carved raised borders.
The tapestry covering is mid 19th century – c. 1850 – and would have taken many months to complete.
In the Victorian period, someone loved this chair so much that they sat sewing these beautiful covers for it. The back panel features a pair of doves over scrolling foliage and running across the seat are a stag and hound in woodland setting. Beautiful gross point work, the colours very bright and original on back and arm panels, the seat a little faded in colour but in excellent condition with no tears or significant wear. These covers were probably made to replace the original Georgian upholstery and perhaps are pretty faithful to the original design.
The upholstery is well padded with horsehair and is in good condition. The chair is capacious and comfortable with a deep and wide seat and plenty of width between the arms.
A very original Georgian ‘Gainsborough’ armchair of a larger than average size and very comfortable with attractive hand carved blind fretwork stretchers.
Dimensions are approximately:
37 inches high, 23 inches wide (max) 25.5 inches deep (max)
From floor to top of seat is 17.5 inches, width between arms at narrowest point is roughly 18 inches. Depth of seat from front to back is 18 inches. Height of back from seat is 22 inches.
