Late 17th-Early 18th Century Louis XV Walnut Fauteuils with Period Needlework

About the Item

A pair of Louis XV Period walnut fauteuils, each with an arch back, serpentine seat rail with floral carving detail. Needlepoint appears to be of the period, with the figures of a male on one chair and a female on the other chair. Chairs are restored. Similar models of these chairs can be found with the stamps of chair makers, such as Nicolas Tillardand his son, Jean-Baptiste, Menusier Ordinaire du Roi, and a master joiner who held various high ranking positions within the Guild. Both Tillards had their chairs carved by Heurtaut. A related example to the present chairs, by Jean-Baptiste Tillard, circa 1755-1760, employs similarly slender arms and legs, as well as a small either shield shaped or floral cartouche on the center of the seat rail. Although these motifes are more often associated with Tillard, the proximity of joiners to one another and close professional relationships between all of these craftsmen would certainly have led to one influencing the designs of another. For example a very similar flower motive appears on an armchair a' la reine, stamped Heutraud (1760-1765) in the Partrige Collection.
