About the Item

A striking Czech reinterpretation of Marcel Breuer’s iconic B64 chair, this rare model K 17 was designed by architect and innovator Robert Slezák and produced by the Slezák factory in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, Czechoslovakia in the 1930s. Rooted in Bauhaus ideals but reimagined through a Czechoslovak functionalist lens, the chair maintains the elegant cantilevered structure in chrome-plated tubular steel, while introducing subtle differences: a single vertical steel brace reinforces the curved caned backrest, giving it a distinctive architectural character. The bentwood armrests and frame edges retain a darker finish, contrasting beautifully with the newly handwoven natural cane seat and back. Documented under the original Slezák factory catalogue number K 17, this model exemplifies the cross-pollination of international modernism and regional craftsmanship that defined interwar Czech design. The piece has been partially restored—its cane seat was expertly re-woven using traditional methods, while the chrome and wood surfaces were carefully cleaned and polished. Minor wear has been preserved to maintain the chair’s historical patina and authenticity. A visually captivating and historically important object, this armchair stands as a rare and collectible piece of Czechoslovak modernism—ideal for collectors, architects, and Bauhaus enthusiasts.
