About the Item

Set of 3 Marius & Marius armchairs designed by Mario Marenco for Arflex in the 1970s. Painted metal frame, foam cushions, linen and wool cover, plastic feet. Excellent condition, restored set. Mario Marenco (Foggia, September 9, 1933 - Rome, March 17, 2019) was an Italian comedian, humorist, actor, television author, and architect and designer. He graduated in architecture in 1957, in Naples, then obtained research fellowships in Stockholm and Chicago. In 1960 he opened his own architecture and design atelier: the DEGW Studio, based in Rome. His activity in these areas, which he always pursued together with his artistic career, is evidenced by projects developed for well-known industries: the aluminum chandelier with references to Op art Cynthia, distributed in 1960 by Artemide, the 1970 Marius & Marius sofa, designed for Arflex according to modular concepts, in 1984 the Movie armchair, Marenco also collaborated with the most important Italian car manufacturers in the creation of their exhibition stands. ARFELX: In 1947 Carlo Barassi, an engineer at Pirelli together with Renato Teani, of Pirelli's financial sector, Pio Reggiani and Aldo Bai, founded the company Ar-flex ('flexible furnishings') then arflex, who together with a young architect Marco Zanuso, began experimenting with the use of foam rubber and elastic tapes for furniture. In the history and life of a company there are events and moments of special significance, which constitute titles of merit recognized by all. The first memorable facts of arflex coincide with its birth, in a small factory on Corso di Porta Vittoria in Milan. There the first organizational core of production and sales was established, but the first meeting with the public took place at the IX Milan Triennale in 1951, after two years of experimentation. It is precisely this early emergence into the limelight in a strictly cultural avant-garde sphere that is to be kept in mind as one travels through the company's history, for this experimental interest, if not divorced from commercial ends, denounces a desire to create products of high technological and aesthetic standards, on the basis of thorough research and experimentation. The Gold Medal of the IX Triennale, awarded to the Lady armchair, first of all rewarded this aspect of arflex production. For these and other iconic furnishings of Italian design follow our SECOND YOUTH gallery, we offer custom research and restoration service .
