Mid-Century Light Blue Shell Chair, Miroslav Navratil, Czechoslovakia, 1960s

About the Item

Amazign Shell chair designed by Miroslav Navratil in 1960s in Czechoslovakia. One of the best project from the past. About the designer: Miroslav Navrátil (born August 23, 1913 in Boršice; died April 14, 1999 in Brno) was a Czechoslovakian designer. He was one of the best-known product designers in Czechoslovakia. Navrátil was born in 1913 in Moravian Boršice near Zlín. From 1927 to 1930 he attended a master school for furniture in Valašské Mezirící, then until 1935 the Czech State Industrial School in Brno. In Brno he also studied history at the local Masaryk University. In the 1950s he became a member of the State Design Studio for the Development of the Furniture Industry (Vývoj nábytkárského prumyslu) in Brno. This studio provided the Czechoslovak furniture industry with sketches and designs. Navrátil mainly designed armchairs and chairs, using new materials and technologies. His most famous design was created in 1959. The so-called "Vertex chair" consists of a fiberglass material made of fiberglass and synthetic resin by the Vertex company in Hradec Králové. The bucket seat has an elliptical hole between the backrest and the seat. In the years that followed, the chair was produced in different shapes and colors with different bases. A variant with armrests was also developed by Navrátil. From 1964 the design was used by the Czechoslovakian tram manufacturer CKD Tatra for the interior design of the Tatra T3/T4 trams, the world's most-produced tram vehicles with well over 15,000 units. The bucket seat was also used in other CKD Tatra vehicle types such as the Tatra KT4 and Tatra T6A2 types. He designed a library for Miroslav Zikmund's house. Navrátil has received multiple awards for its designs. A "Vertex" design by Navrátil received an award at Expo 58 in Brussels, and in 1960 he received the Jury Prize at the Milan Triennale for his design "TV Armchair". Upholstery - Italian Boucle fabric. Beautiful, subtle and modern. We used light blue color. Cigarette test, skin friendly, for every furniture. We can prepare this armchair also in another wood and fabric color. Please check the last pictures with boucle and wood color samples.
