About the Item

This sculptural pair of mid-century armchairs was manufactured by the Jasper Chair Company of Jasper, Indiana, an American maker established in 1921 and known for producing high-quality hardwood seating for both commercial and residential interiors throughout the 20th century. At first glance, the sleek lines, tapered legs, and sculpted arms suggested a production date in the 1950s or early 1960s. But once we began the restoration process, the materials confirmed it. Under the original upholstery, we found: • Solid oak seat frames • Traditional crisscross burlap webbing • A layer of cotton batting • And most notably, an early diamond-shaped Naugahyde tag That small label helped us pinpoint the production to the late 1950s. The font and layout align with Naugahyde’s branding just before they introduced their iconic “Nauga” mascot in the early 1960s. Earlier pieces wouldn't feature Naugahyde at all, as it wasn’t widely used in upholstery until after WWII. Now fully restored, these chairs feature refinished walnut hardwood frames and a deep teal blue velvet upholstery. They are strong, sturdy, and surprisingly comfortable, but what really sets them apart is their feel. They bring a richness and character that would be right at home in an eclectic, artfully layered space. Picture them in a collected historic home, a curated New York loft, or a modern interior that values story as much as style. Chair 24w x 23d x 30h Seat 21w x 18.5d x 19.5h
