Mole Armchair And Stool By Sergio Rodrigues
About the Item
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1927, Rodrigues graduated from the Faculdade Nacional de Arquitetura in 1952, and soon founded one of the first stores of modern furniture and art in Curitiba, followed quickly by the more established company Oca, which he referred to as ‘a laboratory" for Brazilian furniture and which became a critical component of the evolution of Brazilian furniture.
In an extraordinarily long career, Rodrigues designed furniture, hotels and residences, and become the interior designer of choice for fellow Brazilian genius, Oscar Niemeyer, for his newly created capital city of Brasilia.
The Mole armchair, with its fat oversized cushions, is his masterwork, an icon from the moment it was first sold in 1961. It was an immediate and enormous success. The chair has been in continuous production by its first maker, LinBrazil and this particular chair is new production, not vintage.
The Mole armchair and stool are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
