ORGUS CHAIR N.03, 2022 Measures: L 85 x W. 74 cm x H. 75 cm Unique work signed by the artist Materials: Steel, plywood, paper pulp, kaolin mortar, wool and resin. The ORGUS VI collection is the result of new experiments between paper pulp and paint that the Brazilian designer Humberto da Mata has been carrying out in recent months at this studio in São Paulo, Brazil. Presented for the first time at COLLECTIBLE, the fair for 21st century Design, in Brussels, the ORGUS VI collection unveils functional sculptures with soft and beautifully strange curves, intriguing textures and bold colors. Beyond the collection, Humberto da Mata's practice also includes at its heart a respectful approach to contemporary environmental issues since the papier-mâché, the raw material of his creations, comes from a first recycling. "I only use recycled paper, reforesta, tion wood and I always try to use materials that have a clear provenance. Building unique pieces on a small scale and with an eye toward sustainability is also an ecological commitment," concludes the artist. ORGUS IV collection is playful, colorful, asymmetrical and full of modernity, evoking a concentrate of optimism dreamed of by all during the pandemic. While the sculptor-designer's previous collection featured pieces that were less detailed, the ORGUS VI Collection is quite the opposite. "The shapes are more detailed in this body of work. This is one of the results of my many experiments with paper pulp. The material is really plastic and gives me this freedom to work with either simpler or more complex forms," explains Humberto da Mata. Like clay, paper pulp offers malleability with infinite possibilities. The material lends itself well to experimentation and spontaneity, which allows Humberto da Mata to design transversally through- out his creative process. He says, "I don't like to think about my research in a linear way, I can take many directions in terms of aesthetic composition. This group of pieces shows where I’m at the moment. The next group of pieces may be even more detailed or super minimal, I don't know until I start."
