Pair, 17th Century Spanish Armchairs, Hardwood, Velvet, Gilding
About the Item
A pair of hardwood -probably walnut- and velvet armchairs dating from the 17th century -prior to 1658, because this chair can be seen in Vermeer's painting from that year, "The Glass of Wine (Het glas wijn)"
The website EssentialVermeer, The Complete Interactive Vermeer Catalogue, says about this chair: "The type of Spanish chairs seen in the present work is characterized by their rigid yet lightweight construction, lionhead finials, leather upholstery and gilt lozenge patterns. These chairs represent a distinctive furniture style that emerged during the 17th century."
A perfect description of these cleverly-constructed chairs which are remarkably sturdy and indeed lightweight at 25.5 pounds each. The rich gold velvet upholstery looks entirely original, as does the backing fabric, which looks like burlap but is most likely silk. The upholstery on one chair has come loose at the top seem and this same chair has a failed repair (that can be re-glued) on the back. The undersides are woven. The chairs have numerous repairs, but considering their age and method of instruction, they are in very good condition. Left entirely as is, they are incredibly impressive, important historical artifacts that are impossibly beautiful. You could also have them restored for functional use.
Plastic chair leg tips were applied at some point to each chair's rear feet.
One of the ornately carved and gilded lion's heads is missing half.
Nonetheless, what is so extraordinary here is that we have two, not one. A pair, not a single. A pair of chairs that has traveled nearly four centuries through time, remaining together, crossing at least once sea, and remain achingly beautiful.
The chairs are 15" deep, with 24" wide seats that are 14.5" deep, 48" tall from finial to floor, and 23 ⅝" from arm to arm. The seat height is 17" in the center, higher toward the sides.
Rare and exceptional treasures.

Pair Folk Art Paintings on Wood Panel, 1980s, by Moses Tolliver "MoseT"
Located in Southbury, CT
My uncle Bob was a country lawyer in rural Alabama and Moses Tolliver was one of his friends and clients. The pair of original paintings you see here were given to my uncle by Mr. Tolliver in exchange for legal services in the 1980s.
Both the human figure and the snake were painted on scrap wood paneling and each has an aluminum beer pull-tab on the back for hanging. The works have been framed so the pull tab is not visible; if you prefer, simply remove the frames and both pieces will be as created.
The snake painting...
