Pair of 19th-Century English Armchairs in Sheraton Style

About the Item

Pair of 19th-Century English Armchairs in Sheraton Style The armchairs are dated to the late 19th century, featuring soft armrests and legs mounted on brass castors. The chairs are upholstered in fabrics with different patterns. They have not undergone restoration. Sheraton style — directly associated with the English cabinetmaker Thomas Sheraton. The new direction popularized by him aimed to reduce opulence and grandiosity in form. The style flourished in England in the second half of the 18th century. Furniture designed by Sheraton can be described quite clearly with the word "simplicity." The subtlety of the decorations and the compact construction are tasteful. The legs of the furniture become slimmer and are sometimes fluted. The materials used for Sheraton furniture include exotic mahogany, often interspersed with light veneers or rosewood. Additionally, highly weather-resistant satinwood was frequently used. Surfaces were finished with various decorative techniques, including marquetry, reliefs, and veneering.
