Pair of Armchairs in Carved Oak and Rush, France, 1950s
About the Item
With their upright silhouettes and pronounced finials, these armchairs assert a kind of rustic nobility—firm in their bearing, yet softened by the woven tactility of rush. The back and seat unfold in a chevron weave, tightly drawn and warm to the eye, while the carved oak structure introduces a sculptural tension between angularity and craft.
In the style of Charles Dudouyt, the chairs evoke the postwar French vernacular revival, where medieval iconography and modernist restraint found unexpected harmony. Dudouyt’s influence is felt in the pronounced joinery blocks, turned legs, and architectural arm supports—elements that merge graphic force with artisanal reverence.
The legs, in particular, deserve pause. Octagonal at the base, they taper upward with faceted planes that culminate in cube-shaped joints—each incised with a chiseled X, like a wooden rivet. The feet terminate in stepped collars, a quiet nod to classical furniture raised on plinths or toupie feet. This vocabulary of massing, compression, and detail lends the chairs an architectural rhythm—weighty yet animated.
Constructed from solid oak and joined by cross stretchers with chamfered edges, the frame reveals the marks of handwork throughout—subtle irregularities that testify to its maker's touch rather than machine repetition.
Wear consistent with age and use. Meticulously preserved by Jada to maintain structural integrity while honoring original patina.
Equal parts throne and craft object, the pair holds space with dignity—anchored by their mass, uplifted by their geometry.
Available for private acquisition. Inquiries from discerning collectors are welcome.
