Pair of Brazilian Rosewood Armchair by Liceu De Artes e Officios, Midcentury

About the Item

Pair of armchairs designed by Liceu de Artes e Oficios in solid rosewood, Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1960s. The piece has been recently refinished and newly upholstered in natural leather. Liceu De Artes & Oficios was established in 1873 by a group of elite coffee aristocrats that pretended to train skilled labor for possible future industrialization of Brazil. Seven years after, the institution changed completely the proposal, really becoming a school of craftsmanship, occupying a building design by Ramos de Azevedo and been directly also by him. The teaching models become to follow the European Arts & Crafts Schools and the institution focused on design, casting, locksmithing, carpentry, and other fields. During these golden years of production many sofas, armchairs, credenzas by many Brazilian young designers were manufactured and commercialized by Liceu de Artes e Oficios. Due to the high level of craftsmanship in modern drawn, it's common to see Liceu pieces being (wrongly) tributed to Joaquim Tenreiro.

  • "Vronka" Rosewood Midcentury Armchair by Brazilian Designer Sergio Rodrigues
    By Sergio Rodrigues
    Located in New York, NY
Designed in 1962 by Sergio Rodrigues, the “Vronka” armchair was made of solid Rosewood structure and a floating, comfortable cushion. Like many designers of Rodrigues's generation, he dreams of commercializing well-designed furniture produced in series. In 1962 “Meia-Pataca” factory-cum-store was launch. The idea was to expand distribution and reduce production costs. The industrial thought is visible on the structural solution, applying juxtaposed wooden pieces of a square or rectangular section and straight corners. Other pieces like the “Franco” sofa, the “Tonico” armchair...

  • Vintage Rosewood Armchair by Celina Decorações, Brazilian Midcentury, 1960s
    By Celina Decoracoes

This armchair is made of solid Brazilian Rosewood, with new upholstery in gorgeous suede leather. The armrests have a rectangular design with a back of vertical slats. This model features a delicate and still well-constructed use of this precious wood, which became very scarce with the passage of the years. This piece received new upholstery in soft nubuck leather, but its structure in solid Rosewood remais in original condition. Based in Rio de Janeiro, the Celina Decorações factory imposed high-quality standards, maintaining handcrafted characteristics. The company was created in 1951 when Munis Zilberberg takes over the family business - a small upholstery workshop that worked on refurbishing sofa beds and antique furniture. The name is a tribute to her mother, Celina Zilberberg...
