Brazilian Modern Armchair in Hardwood & Velvet by Liceu de Artes, 1960, Brazil

About the Item

Available right now, this gorgeous Mid Century Modern armchair has a solid Brazilian Rosewood base, known as Jacaranda and upholstery in soft Grey velvet. The wood is of the finest quality showcasing colorful veins. The armchair has a tall backrest and loose cushions. This piece encapsulates the Brazilian Modern design of the sixties in a superb way: The bowling pin legs seen in many Brazilian design icons like the Mole armchair, a rocking chair seat that emulates traditional rocking chairs and a relaxed appearance accomplished by the super loose cushions to the sides. This gorgeous piece would look great in any mid century modern, modern, contemporary or boho chic environment and the iconic design and size will make armchair an absolute must in everyone’s mid century modern century collection. Size: H34.6, W33.9, D34.6 (in) H88, W86, D88 (cm) The piece was designed and executed by the Liceu De Artes & Oficios, an institution founded in 1873 by a group of elite coffee aristocrats that pretended to train skilled labor for possible future industrialization of Brazil. During these golden years of production many sofas, armchairs, credenzas by many Brazilian young designers were manufactured and commercialized by Liceu de Artes e Oficios. Lucio Costa, the Brazilian urban planner, and architect best known for his plan for Brasilia taught and led the design department from 1938 to 1954. Brazilian rosewood, also called Jacaranda, is perhaps one of the most beautiful woods in the world. It is regarded as one of the finest tone woods; hard, stiff, and highly resonant with a glass-like ring that sustains; it has a floral scent, like roses, thus the name. However, extensive logging over the past three centuries has virtually eliminated this tree from the Brazilian forests, so that today it is not supposed to be logged. The only material that can be sold legally is old stock. By owning a vintage piece made of old Jacaranda, you’re not only getting a beautiful collectible but also helping this species to recuperate.
